History of Westgate, Iowa
🛤️ Origins and Railroad Influence
Westgate was established in 1886 when the Minnesota and Northwestern Railroad laid tracks between Sumner and Oelwein. Sylvester Westgate’s farm was chosen as a station site, giving the town its name.
🏛️ Incorporation and Growth
The town was incorporated on July 6, 1896. A post office has operated since its founding. The population peaked at 260 in 1900 and was 192 as of the 2020 census.

In 2011, Westgate celebrated its 125th anniversary with “Westgate Days,” honoring its heritage and community spirit.
